Understand your diagnosis
Eye conditions and exams explained in plain language: symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
Macular degeneration (AMD)
The leading cause of central vision loss after age 60. The wet form is treated with intravitreal injections.
Diabetic retinopathy
A complication of diabetes that damages the blood vessels of the retina. It may cause no symptoms at first, which is why a yearly eye exam is essential.
Blocked retinal vein (vein occlusion)
A blockage of a retinal vein that causes bleeding and macular edema. It requires prompt treatment and a medical workup.
Macular edema
Fluid buildup in the center of the retina that blurs vision. It results from several conditions and responds well to early treatment.
Retinal detachment
An eye emergency in which the retina separates from the back wall of the eye. Recognizing the symptoms early makes all the difference.
Presbyopia (aging eyes)
The natural loss of the ability to focus up close after age 40. It can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or surgery.
Blurry vision after cataract surgery (YAG laser)
A quick, painless laser treatment for vision that becomes cloudy again months or years after cataract surgery.
Eye freckle (ocular nevus)
It can appear on the conjunctiva, the iris or the choroid. Most are benign, but they need documented follow-up.
Dry eye
An unstable tear film that causes burning and fluctuating vision. Treating it before surgery improves the accuracy of measurements and the result.
OCT exam (retinal scan)
A quick, non-contact imaging test that shows the layers of the retina in high resolution. The basis for diagnosis and follow-up.
I also perform laser refractive surgery (PRK with mitomycin and LASIK) for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

How much time should I set aside for the visit?
It depends on the tests you need. If your pupils are dilated, the drops need time to take effect before the exam, so it is a good idea to allow extra time.
Will my pupils be dilated?
Not always. Dilation is used when the back of the eye needs a detailed exam, for example in diabetes follow-up, in retinal diseases and before surgery. Afterwards, your vision stays blurry and sensitive to light for a few hours.
Can I drive after the visit?
Not if your pupils are dilated. Your vision stays blurry for a few hours, so it is best to come with someone or take a taxi or a ride-hailing app.
Do you accept health insurance?
When booking by WhatsApp or phone, tell us your health insurance plan: our team will confirm whether it is accepted and explain the private (self-pay) options.
Is there parking, and is the office accessible?
Yes. There is paid street parking and a parking lot at the Zaffari supermarket on the same block. The office is one floor above street level (1º andar) and is accessible. If you need assistance when you arrive, let us know when booking.
Can the consultation be in English?
Yes. Consultations can be held in English or Portuguese.
